What is the "rule of thirds" in photography?

The rule of thirds is a composition method in photography where a subject is placed on the left or right third of an image, allowing the space to guide the viewers' eyes and highlight the subject.

Following the approach you can imagine what you see through the viewfinder as a 3×3 grid like the one above, and then place your main subjects at any of the intersecting points on this grid. Here are a few samples from our community members using the rule of thirds method:
