Every June 21st we celebrate World Music Day, or as it is commonly known, Fête de la Musique. During this day the streets of cities and towns all over the world are filled with music as musicians play their hearts out. Last year we took a look at how Fête de la Musique was celebrated, and this year we look at the many Lomography community photos showcasing different sides of music photography.

Artist Photos and Portraits

For a musician, having an artist photo taken can be nerve-wracking. But with a trustworthy photographer and a good plan, you can showcase a different side of your music through photos. You can showcase more of your personality as an artist and become even more relatable to your audiences. You also extend the storytelling of your music through the visuals, using giant backdrops or going to far locations to get that perfect shot that can represent the project you are working on. Though this can be an afterthought for some, having a good picture, whether for the press, promotion or even for fun, is part of the experience of being an artist which should not be neglected.

Underground and Community Shows

The local music scene is the heart and soul of a community as it gives artists a chance to show off their skills and create something special for the locals. Beyond the musicians, there are also people who make the scene just as special like photographers, graphic designers, sound engineers venue owners, and most importantly the fans. Coming together for the love of music and community and being part of this movement is something life-changing and will create bonds for years to come. As a music photographer, capturing moments at local music events is super important as it helps preserve the history of your own local scene. Each picture captures the talent, energy, sense of togetherness and intimacy that these communities thrive on.

Behind The Scenes and Intimate Moments

With social media, zine culture, and photobooks, seeing the intimate side of music is much easier compared to decades ago. With older music photographers showcasing their historical and never-before-seen look into certain music scenes and young partygoers catching intimate moments at a rave, seeing the more personal side of music has become more prevalent. For some, it demystifies the glitz and glamor of the music scene but it also just shows how musicians, artists, DJs, producers and the like are just like us and have a softer and more real side to them. Beyond that, we get to see diverse aspects of concerts, tours, and music production from the perspectives of crew members, sound engineers, tour staff, and various other behind-the-scenes contributors. Nowadays anyone can capture and share these profound memories and transformative experiences to the rest of the world and hopefully, this can inspire people to take more photos.

Festivals

Music festivals have been going on for more than half a century. From the legendary Woodstock in the 60s to more modern iterations spanning different genres such as Coachella, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival or Wonderfruit there is a festival out there for every type of music fan looking for a specific musical experience. Going to these festivals is a life-changing experience which is why it's always a must to try and capture these moments in our own ways. The elaborate stage designs, vibrant lights, and expansive grounds provide us with a grand playground to test and play around with photography. Whether you're going as a fan trying to catch their favorite artist, a performer looking to catch all those intimate behind-the-scenes shots or a concert photographer on duty, there will be an abundance of great photos to look back on in the decades to come.
