A Getaway in Lyon With Hugo Bernatas and the Lomomatic 110

Today we chat with Lyon-based filmmaker and photographer Hugo Bernatas, who recently tried out our new Lomomatic 110 film camera. Hugo took it with him during a skateboarding session and on a springtime stroll around the city. Check out his wonderful results below and read about his impressions!

Hello Hugo and welcome to Lomography's online magazine! Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your photographic journey?

Hello! I'm a filmmaker, editor and analogue photographer for about 15 years now. I started with my parent's Polaroid 636 Close Up when I was young and I still use it to this day.
I photograph a lot of things related to the skateboard world - one of my greatest passions - and I also do quite a bit of architecture photography.

You tried our new Lomomatic 110. What did you think of it? Are you familiar with 110 format?

It was my first time holding a 110 camera; it's a format I never tried before. In terms of usability, it's quite practical as I went out several times for skateboarding sessions with friends and the camera fit nicely in my pocket. Plus, it's discreet enough for street photography with its horizontal design.

I had some initial concerns about the results of the 110 format in general, but in the end it really convinced me. And I really liked the mechanism to advance to the next frame by sliding, although I was wondering how to use it at first!

We really like this shot. Could you tell us more about it?

Well, this photo was taken during a lunchtime skate session with Jérémie Daclin, who is a former French skateboard champion. Skateboarding really is what led me to do what I do now. My first film photographs were of my friends skateboarding, taken with a disposable camera. Similarly, when I started with video, I filmed everything that happened during skate sessions.

If you had to choose you favorite photo from this session, which one would it be and for what reasons?

I would chose this one:

Firstly, because it's one of my favorite spots in the Tête d'Or park in Lyon, with its old wooden bridge. And also for the atmosphere that was there during that day, at the beginning of spring. I'm very pleased with the result of this backlighting!

Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like to share with us?

Yes, I have an exhibition coming up in October at Baam in Lorient, featuring a photo series I've been working on for three years about military architecture, specifically bunkers. A book stemming from the exhibition will also be released afterward.
